Dry eye is one of the most common conditions we encounter at Strong Eye Care. A dry eye consultation starts with a history of symptoms, with a particular focus on possible triggers. A detailed eye exam follows looking for clues to which part of the tear film is dysfunctional. This is critical as there are many types of dry eye, and not all treatment options work effectively for each type. A treatment plan will be reviewed with the patient, and follow-up visits are indicated to assess for treatment success and adjust the plan as necessary.

A variety of treatment options include various types of artificial tears, environmental modification, prescription medications, treatment of underlying skin conditions, and compounded serum tears.

Dry eye can range from minor symptoms to debilitating pain and even scarring with vision loss. Symptoms can vary, and may include one or more of the following:

  • blurred vision that fluctuates
  • tired eyes
  • burning
  • redness
  • feeling like something is in the eye
  • light sensitivity, and sandy feeling

There are many different underlying causes, including environmental factors such as prolonged screen time or excessive fan use, allergies, auto-immune conditions such as Sjogren’s syndrome, skin conditions including rosacea, and medication effects such as anti-depressants and anti-histamines to name a few.

Problems can occur from overly rapid tear evaporation, insufficient tear production, inflammation of the eye surface, eyelid oil gland dysfunction, and disturbance of the normal mucous layer of the eye.

While dry eye can be a frustrating condition, many good treatment options exist. Contact us to schedule your consultation.
